Mobile phone users targeted by nuisance callers – Which?

Mobile phone users are increasingly being targeted by nuisance callers, new research from Which? can reveal.Â
Seven in ten mobile phone users said they had received at least one unwanted call to their mobile in the past month.Â
This has risen since 2013, where 55% of people said they’d received a nuisance call to their mobile in the previous month.
The research also found that 10% of mobile phone users received more than 20 nuisance calls in a single month.Â
Despite the rise in such calls, many mobile phone users don’t realise that they can register with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS).
Data from Ofcom and the TPS reveals that just 3% of the 78.9 million registered mobile phone users in the UK have signed up with the TPS.Â
There have now been more than 65,000 uses of the Which? nuisance calls reporting tool, which enables you to report nuisance calls to the regulators.
Opt-out of nuisance calls
While two thirds of people were aware of the TPS, the Which? survey of 2,097 UK adults found that only around a third thought the TPS could be used to block unsolicited calls to mobile phones.Â
Which? has worked with the TPS to launch a brand new free text service which allows people to register their mobile phone numbers.

Which? executive director Richard Lloyd said: ‘With the number of nuisance calls to mobile phones on the rise, itâs vital that people register their phone if they want to help protect themselves from this everyday menace.
‘The government, regulators and business need to continue to work together to tackle nuisance calls, with further action to cut them off at the source and make senior executives accountable if their company is caught flouting the rules.’
Bring an end to nuisance calls
More than 280,000 people have backed our Calling Time campaign and a number of major companies have also publicly pledged their support.
The nuisance calls and texts task force, led by Which?, has outlined recommendations to introduce tougher rules and more action from businesses, the regulators and the government.
Which? is calling on the government to make senior executives accountable for their companyâs unlawful nuisance calls and require businesses to show their number when they call.
Which? would also like to see businesses support our campaign by making a public commitment to tackle nuisance calls, and for regulators to give people more power by putting them in control of how their personal data is used.
