Jail detainee accused of taping talk show, battering officer who found laptop – Chicago Tribune

A Cook County detainee was charged with aggravated battery to a correctional officer after he was found in his cell with a laptop he was using to video a talk show, officials said.

Jimmie Smith, 41, has been in Cook County Jail for more than seven years fighting several charges including attempted murder, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated criminal sexual assault and two counts of contraband in a penal institution.

While in custody, Smith was additionally charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and possession of contraband in a penal institution related to a 2014 incident when he attacked his public defender, according to a release from the Cook County Sheriff’s office.

Officials announced Saturday that video surveillance revealed Smith punching a female officer in the face Dec. 5 while he was inside a cell in Division 9, the release said.
