I-Team Exclusive: Cell phone nabs rape suspect – fox8.com

CLEVELAND- The FOX 8 I-Team has found cell phone tracking systems are helping to solve crimes. Police say twice in recent months, victims of sex assaults have used cell phone tracking to help find attackers.

In the latest case, a young mother says she was attacked on Cleveland’s near west side as she went to the hospital to visit a relative. The woman says a male grabbed her, knocked her unconscious, sexually assaulted her, robbed her and took off.

The victim’s mother remembered her daughter had paid for an extra tracking system when she bought the phone next door. With the help of the salesman, the victim’s mother found where the attacker had been calling. She says the suspect tried to sell the phone to a relative. Then we’re told, the victim’s family worked with the suspect’s family to set him up and bust him.

A police report shows the suspect was tracked down across town near East 78th and Cedar. He had just turned 17.

That phone salesman showed us, cell phones these days have all kinds of features to help customers find the phones or see how they’ve been used. Some of those systems come with the phones, some can be downloaded as apps, and some come with an extra charge.

The I-Team has also found another Cleveland attacker went to prison in July after molesting and robbing a woman, and that victim also tracked her phone to help locate the suspect.

In the latest case, Cuyahoga County Prosecutors are pushing to have the teen suspect tried as an adult. The I-Team found he already has a long arrest record as a juvenile for robberies, assaults, burglary and more.
