Child porn found on Derby teacher’s school-issued laptop – Wichita Eagle

A forensic investigator examining electronics seized from a Derby North Middle School teacher arrested on suspicion of child sex crimes found child pornography on his school-issued computer, according to a court document released Friday.

The image, which was discovered Oct. 21, showed a “posed, nude girl who appeared to be approximately 12 to 13 years of age,” the document says. It was found on a MacBook Pro laptop in a media cache folder associated with Internet video chat service Skype.

The laptop had been issued by the Derby School District to 40-year-old Steven E. Young, an eighth-grade social studies teacher. He was charged last month with electronic solicitation of a child and sexual exploitation of a child after authorities said he was caught having explicit contact with an undercover crime analyst with a Wisconsin sheriff’s office, The analyst was posing as a 14-year-old girl online.

Young, according to the document, used an online chat room geared toward teens to find and message her on July 23 and then continued the contact via e-mail and on Skype.

Steven Young used an online chat room geared toward teens to find and message a Wisconsin crime analyst he thought was a 14-year-old girl, according to the document.

The two had several conversations over Skype in the subsequent months while Young was at home and while he was at work in his classroom, the document says. During one chat, the document says, Young could be seen wearing a green Derby North Middle School lanyard.

Young, the document says, committed a crime on Oct. 17 when he took off his clothes and masturbated during a Skype video chat with the undercover analyst.

The document, known as a probable cause affidavit, details other conversations Young allegedly had with the undercover analyst and lists several items seized during a law enforcement search of Young’s Derby home. Among them were a laptop, iPad, three cellphones, cameras, thumbdrives, several computer discs and an external computer storage device.

Authorities also seized Young’s school-issued iPad from his classroom when he was arrested at the school, 3100 N. Rock Road in Derby, on Oct. 19.

Young is being held in Sedgwick County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bond while he awaits his next court date in the case.

A spokeswoman for Derby public schools could not be reached Friday afternoon to answer questions about the laptop and about Young’s current employment status.

He allegedly used the usernames “manup” on the teen chat room site and “teachubuzz” on Skype.

Last month, when news of his arrest became public, the district said Young had been suspended from work pending the outcome of the investigation. His biography on the school’s website was no longer accessible Friday evening. It had said Young had been a teacher for 15 years.

Young allegedly used the usernames “manup” on the teen chat room site and “teachubuzz” on Skype, according to the court document.

During one conversation, he told the crime analyst, “I suppose I shouldn’t dream of such a young person as you. Probably seen as a pedophilia,” according to the document.
