Bullet struck Pa. man’s cell phone during Istanbul attack – New York Daily News

A stashed cell phone may have saved a Pennsylvania man’s life during a New Year’s Eve massacre at an Istanbul nightclub.

A gunman’s barrage of bullets ripped through the popular party spot packed with an estimated 600 revelers, striking Chadds Ford native Jake Raak, 35, in the leg after piercing his phone, his mother said.

He narrowly escaped a life-threatening injury to his upper leg.

“He’s fine and coming home,” Grace Raak told the Daily News.

She said her son — the lone American wounded in the assault — was visiting Turkey with friends for New Year’s Eve. One of those pals was also among at least 70 people wounded in the attack, Raak added.

Survivors reportedly leaped into the Bosporus strait to escape the shooter, who remains at large. At least 39 people were killed in the assault, including many foreign nationals.

Raak, still wearing a sports jacket and white buttoned up shirt, was captured on video telling local reporters he was shot in the leg while being carried into an ambulance near the nightclub.

“I got shot in the f—ing leg, man. These crazy people came and shooting up everything,” said Jake Raak, clarifying that he only saw one gunman.

He later called his brother from the hospital to let him know he was OK. It was the only phone number he could remember off the wrecked phone, his mother said said.

“The bullet deflected from the cell phone. It destroyed his contacts,” Raak added. “He was very fortunate that it did.”
